Manchester United Drinking water plan
Acting Hangzhou Mayor Zhang Hongming said on Monday that the 9.7 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) pipeline project to channel drinking water from the Qiandao Lake into the city will start this year.
The water diversion project was proposed 10 years ago by Zhejiang Province Water Resources Bureau to bring high-quality drinking water to Hangzhou and Jiaxing. But the plan was shelved after a hydropower expert, Qian Zhengying, vetoed it.
Hangzhou brought the plan up again in 2011 but it was opposed by people in downstream Jiande County who are worried that the pipeline might affect their water source.
After a string of water pollution cases last year when people complained about a strange smell in Hangzhou’s tap water, 26 factories along the Qiantang River were shut down and the pipeline project was put on the city agenda again.
Once the 111-kilometer pipeline is built, Qiandao Lake will replace the Qiantang River as the city’s main water source and provide up to 978 million cubic meters of water a year.
The Qiandao Lake is a man-made reservoir west of Hangzhou with a surface area of 580 square kilometers. Its water quality is rated among the best in China.
