Many tasty reasons to visit this famous downtown folk street
BAIJINGFANG Lane is a narrow strip in downtown Hangzhou that is considered a folk street known for its restaurants.
Its name Baijingfang literally means "a block of 100 wells." It did boast 99 wells, which were built by Qian Liu (AD 852-932), who ruled the Wuyue Kingdom. Hangzhou was the capital of the regime.
Today only three wells, all sealed by cement, remain.
The folk street has a nice mix of residential and commercial constructions.
At the east end of Baijingfang Lane, restaurants offer everything from Chinese fast food and barbecue items to mutton and seafood. Shanghai Daily grabs a bite at five eateries.
Yuanyiguo Goat Spine Restaurant
Goat spine is considered a delicacy whether it is barbecued or stewed in soup, provided the raw meat flavor is removed.
The goat spine hotpot is the restaurant's top seller. They add ginger, scallion and pepper to the broth to eliminate the strong goat meat odor.
It is said the bone is rich in calcium and that the meat attached to the bone is high in protein with little fat. Stewing the goat spine for a long time helps the broth absorb these nutrients and makes the soup taste better.
The restaurant also sells barbecued food such as barbecued goat spine, goat hoof, goat shank and goat rib, all salted and peppered.
In traditional Chinese medicine, goat meat is considered a warm reinforcing food that helps people gain yang (warm) energy. But TCM practitioners say don't eat too much to avoid over-warming the body.

Sina's Date Scallop King & Zhoushan Shenjiamen Seafood Restaurant
This place only sells barbecued scallops, oysters and abalone as snacks at night. It rents a wonton restaurant daily from 7:30pm to midnight.
It is a branch of Bo You Seafood Barbecue on Kaixuan Road, which is also known as "Hangzhou's King of Scallops."
The chef/boss surnamed Jiang started his weibo on Sina.com last May and has since attracted 6,000 followers.
With people raving about the food, swarms of customers started turning up, exceeding the original booth's capacity. Jiang then opened the new branch on Baijingfang Lane in September.
Although the booth is small, the price is above average. Six barbecued oysters cost 45 yuan (US$7.2), six scallops 40 yuan and one small abalone sells for 10 yuan.
For more seafood, Zhoushan Shenjiamen Seafood Restaurant, opposite the booth, could be an option. Recommendations include tofu stewed with fish in soy oil, tofu stewed with fish and pepper and seafood rice noodle.

Ding Ge Snakehead Fish Restaurant & Baiwei Fish Restaurant
Ding Ge Snakehead Fish Restaurant is the most popular fish-dish chain in Hangzhou with at least a dozen branches around the city. The one situated in Baijingfang Lane is one of the oldest.
Snakeheads are freshwater fish native to Africa and Asia.
These elongated, predatory fish are considered great for making suan cai yu (sour vegetable fish) pot, a traditional dish from Huiyang Chinese cuisine, because of its fat, tender meat.
The fish spine is fried and boiled in the soup with sour vegetables. The flesh from the fish is sliced and slightly boiled to ensure it remains tender.
Four or five years ago, Ding Ge became popular as suan cai yu became a trendy dish around the country.
The restaurant has created a series of fish pots including pork and fish pot, fish pot with soy milk, corn and fish pot, as well as crab and fish pot.
Baiwei Fish Restaurant, opposite Ding Ge, provides very similar dishes but excels at tomato and fish pot. This concoction has a bright-red color and sour-spicy flavor.
