Metro expansion

CONSTRUCTION plans for Metro lines 2, 4, 5 and 6 in Hangzhou have been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner.

Phase 2 construction of Line 2 and phase 1 construction of the other three lines have a total length of 106.6 kilometers and will cost 69.9 billion yuan.

Lines 2 and 4 are to be completed in 2017 while lines 5 and 6 are expected to be finished by 2019.

Phase 2 of Line 2 will have eight stations from Fengtan Road Station to Xinliang Road Station. Phase 1 of Line 4 runs from Dongguan Road Station to Pengbu Station. Line 5 goes from Xiangzhang Road Station to Kejidao Station and Line 6 goes from Shuangpu Town Station to Neihuan Road W. Station.

Construction of line 4 is expected to start by the end of the year while work on lines 5 and 6 is expected to start in the first half of next year. Hangzhou plans to build 13 subway lines with a total length of 560 kilometers.

Work started last Friday on the main structure of Qingchun Square Station on Metro Line 2. The station, at Qingchun and Jingtan roads in Jianggan District, will be built in three phases and open in 2017. The station, part of Metro Line 2's extension, will have service from 5am to 11pm.

Since Qingchun Square Station is east of the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital and south of the central business district, traffic authorities are reminding people to avoid the area as traffic jams are likely.
