Metro management

HANGZHOU Metro Group plans to adopt a public-private partnership model for the management of lines 5 and 6.

It already signed a deal with Hong Kong MTR in 2012 to form a 51:49 joint venture to operate Metro Line 1 for 25 years.

Metro Line 5 will cover 48.5 kilometers from Sci-Tech Island Station in Yuhang District to Xiangzhang Road Station in Xiaoshan District and cost about 35 billion yuan (US$5.69 billion). Construction on phase one will begin this year and it is expected to open in 2019.

Construction on the first phase of Line 6 will begin next year and is scheduled to open in 2019. The 27km route will run from Shuangpu Station in Xihu District to Neihuan Road W. Station in Xiaoshan District.

Meanwhile, stricter security measures have been introduced at all stations to ensure public safety in the wake of a serious bus fire.

Passengers will be asked to drink any liquids they are carrying to prove they are harmless before they are allowed to pass through ticket turnstiles, the operator said.

The additional security was introduced after a passenger poured a flammable liquid on a Hangzhou bus on July 5 and set it on fire. More than 30 people were injured.

Commuters who refuse to comply with security checks and create public disturbances may face detention.
