Metro mishap
A burst of dry powder from a fire extinguisher under a Metro seat turned a Metro Line 1 carriage into a mess and caused a 3-minute delay during morning rush hour on Tuesday.
The train was entering Qibao Station around 8:45am when the fire extinguisher suddenly ejected dry powder, causing a stampede as passengers screamed and ran toward other carriages. No one was injured.
Metro workers said the fire extinguisher’s chemical powder was already empty and the safety pin on its handle was missing. One extinguisher contains 4 kilograms of dry powder.
“A surveillance footage video showed only the backs of seated passengers, and the train was overcrowded at the time. We couldn’t tell who pulled the safety pin out,” Metro spokesman Wu Ting said.
“We questioned the passengers in the carriage but no one picked out the troublemaker,” Wu added.
The incident is still being investigated.
Wu said passengers can get help by pressing an emergency button and then wait for the train to reach a station where police are on standby.
