Molds reveal history
Six clay molds, which contain engraved coin designs of 5 zhu (a monetary unit), from the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), were unearthed when workers were building a subway station on Yan’an Road. Their discovery proves that Hangzhou was already a population center 2,000 years ago, contrary to the prevailing belief that the region east of the West Lake was under water at the time.
