Mom credits airport

Xiaoshan International Airport received a letter recently from a woman passenger who thanked the airport staff for calling back a plane already taxiing on the runway to pick her up as she was rushing to her daughter’s funeral being held in Changsha, Hunan Province.

Chen Jing, the passenger, got a call around 10pm on September 15 that her daughter and mother-in-law had a car accident in Changsha and her daughter died.

Chen, who was in Hangzhou on a business trip, rushed to the Xiaoshan airport to catch the last flight of the day to Changsha, but she was late and the plane had taxied onto the tarmac for 5 kilometers, waiting for take-off.

Chen broke down in tears. “I was desperate at the time,” she said.

The airline staff learned about her tragedy and contacted the airport authority. Meanwhile, the flight crew persuaded the 133 passengers onboard to wait a little longer. The approval was given and the plane returned to the boarding gate 20 minutes later to pick Chen up.

The plane finally took off at 12:54am, one hour behind schedule.
