More electric cabs

HANGZHOU plans to add 300 electric taxis by the end of June, bringing the total on the road to 500.

Hangzhou New Energy Taxi Co will buy electric cars from Zotye Auto. Passengers pay the same fare as ordinary taxis with a starting charge of 11 yuan (US$1.77) for the first 3 kilometers. For a trip less than 10km, the rate is 2.5 yuan per km; beyond 10km, the rate will be 3.75 yuan per km. The waiting charge is 2.5 yuan every four minutes.

Electric taxis appeared on Hangzhou streets in January 2011 when the city began to promote clean energy to cut carbon emissions.

Currently, 10 battery stations are in operation across the city, and the local power company plans to set up more points, especially in the suburbs and around the airport.

Hangzhou is one of 13 mainland cities selected to pilot a central government program to popularize new energy vehicles with subsidies.

All the new electric taxis will be equipped with a video monitoring system and a GPS device. Hangzhou will increase the number of electric taxis to 2,000 in five years.
