Museum frames cartoon artist's career

AN old Chinese saying goes: On festive occasions more than ever we think of our dear ones far away.

During this month's Dragon Boat Festival, veteran artist He Youzhi was looking back to the old times when he was putting his creative efforts into comic books.

An exhibition of He's work is currently running at Zhejiang Art Museum, recalling old stories told by this dying art.

"Nowadays, hand-drawn comic books are becoming a dead end, and this exhibition may be the last rays of the setting sun," He said.

The exhibition, entitled "Passion -- Affection," organized by Zhejiang Art Museum, China Art Museum, Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, runs until June 30.

Its title expresses 92-year-old He's love for comic books.

He, who won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, was born in Zhenhai County, Zhejiang Province in 1922. He graduated from elementary school and was employed as a manual worker.

In 1949, he began to draw cartoons, over the years creating numerous volumes, sets and series.

He also drew illustrations for novels and created art works for children.

He's works "360 Trades in Old Shanghai" and "Old Shanghainese in Longtang" were exhibited at the World Expo Shanghai 2010. He has also held exhibitions in France, Singapore and elsewhere.

He taught for seven years at the Central Art Academy in Beijing. There He revealed his attitude to teaching.

"When I find creativity cannot be taught, I come back," he said.

Diverse works including "Cataclysmic Changes," "Chao Yang Gou" and "White Light" feature in the exhibition, showcasing He's unique style.

In a talk to coincide with the launch of the exhibition, He gave insights into his work.

"The most important part of comic books is the detail. Drawing cartoons is not only relative to skills, but also to good plots in the books," He said, showing examples of his work to illustrate this.

He has donated his cartoons to the museum, so that his work can be seen by others.
