New air monitor

Hangzhou will start building the fourth air quality monitoring station at the West Lake Scenic Area next month.

The new monitoring station, to be located at Lotus Peak, is tailored to detect pollutants in the scenic area, such as indicating PM2.5 readings.

PM2.5 refers to airborne particles that are smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. They are a main cause of urban pollution and are harmful to human health.

The measurements will be part of a report which will be handed to the World Heritage Center in 2017.

The city’s air quality became better this week as the arrival of rain and wind with a cold front has reduced pollutants.
