New book kiosks
To promote reading as a leisure pastime, authorities in Hangzhou are planning to add 300 more new book-lending kiosks to the current 150 in residential communities around the city.
Known as 鈥渇loating libraries,鈥 these small unstaffed kiosks contain several shelves of books which residents can borrow between the hours of 7am and 7pm.
Many of these kiosks are also built near public seating areas, giving readers the chance to sample books before checking them out. Residents are encouraged to return these books after they are done reading them.
In May, Chinese President Xi Jinping praised these kiosks during his visit to Hangzhou. Currently, more than 80,000 books are in circulation at these mini libraries, all donated by publishers, bookstores and individuals.
First appearing in 2012 in Qianjiang New Town, the city鈥檚 new business district along the Qiangtangjiang River, those small drifting libraries are now a common site in Hangzhou.
