New drug users up
IN the first six months of this year, there were 780 new registrations of drug users in Hangzhou - 8.5 percent higher than for the same period last year, according to local government.
At the end of June, 5,434 people with Hangzhou registered permanent residence were registered as drug users in the city.
Figures show that drug use among younger people is increasing. Last year the city recorded 2,207 drug users who were under 35. In the latest figures, this age group accounted for 81 percent of new drug users.
Hangzhou police will launch educational initiatives targeting the general public, vulnerable groups and drug users.
The municipal government has set a target that more than 30 percent of reformed addicts should be provided with jobs, and policies tackle life difficulties of drug users.
Last year, Hangzhou police caught 4,795 people involved in drug crimes and seized more than 30 kilograms of drugs.
