New mothers and babies get attention
TO mark the upcoming World Population Day on Sunday, Shangcheng District is promoting mother and child health.
"Investing in Women Is a Smart Choice" is the theme of the day, and the district is emphasizing its "Three Goods" program - good prenatal care, good postnatal care and good early education.
The aim is to reduce the risk of birth defects and improve the health and chances of newborns.
Last week the district held an open-air party to encourage pregnant women and new mothers.
Under China's one-child family planning policy, the "Three Goods" program is especially important and was initiated around 30 years ago. Today it is carried out in every residential district of cities and villages.
In late 2008, Zhejiang Province promoted free pre-marital medical checkups and free examinations for every pregnant and married woman who has lived for more than six months in the province.
Shangcheng District goes further. It will set up the Three Goods Guide Center at Nanxing Community in October, offering free quality prenatal and postnatal care and quality early education for babies under three years of age.
While many private early education facilities charge high tuition that can run up to several hundred yuan an hour, the new center will be free to every resident. The center will cooperate with the Zhejiang Early Education Institute, a public welfare academy.
At the party last week, teachers from the institute led parent-and-child games played to bouncy music; all involved touching and bonding.
"Children love body contact and crawling with your baby helps develop smart and healthy kids," says Wang Xiaoyan, director of the institute.
"And children love music. So if your baby is cranky, sing a song and move his or her body to help them calm down and cooperate."
