New police units vow quick response time
THE newly founded Hangzhou Traffic Police Tactical Unit has vowed to reach the scene of traffic accidents quicker than before to ensure the injured get prompt treatment and reduce traffic jams downtown.
The Hangzhou Police Bureau drew on its experience from the Hangzhou Police Tactical Unit, a special team at the forefront of security in the city, and established the TPTU at the end of July.
The TPTU has special equipment including squad cars with a 360-degree camera on the roof and a bike attached to the trunk.
Chen Liang, a police officer of the Xiacheng District Traffic Police Detachment, said the bike will be useful when traffic is bad.
“When we can’t respond immediately with the police car due to traffic congestion an officer can ride the bike to reach the scene,” Chen said.
TPTU cars will also have a stretcher, breathalyzer, pepper spray, first-aid kit and other equipment.
“Since Hangzhou is now building Metro lines, there are construction sites all over the city, meaning traffic jams are more common than before,” Chen added. “Congestion is even worse when there is an accident. Therefore, arriving and handling an accident quickly can improve traffic flow to some extent.”
The Hangzhou Police Tactical Unit is an independent police department, but the TPTU remains a part of the regular force. Police stations around the city are required to establish TPTU teams to patrol the area under their jurisdiction.
The TPTU officers wear a beret and a different uniform than other traffic police officers. TPTU cars patrol the city 24 hours a day in order to rapidly deal with accidents.
