New pumping station
Sino-Hydro Bureau 12 Co Ltd won the bid to supply drinking water from Qiandao Lake, the city’s second biggest source of fresh water, to Hangzhou residents with the construction of a pumping station in Chun’an County.
Construction of the station will cost 540.62 million yuan (US$87 million) and take 37 months. The company will also build a pipeline stretching 112.34 kilometers from the lake to Hangzhou. The pipeline will have the capacity for 978 million cubic meters of water a year and will cost 9.7 billion yuan.
Qiandao Lake is actually a man-made reservoir with a vast storage of high-quality fresh water. Pumping water directly to Hangzhou can eliminate pollution compared to drawing water from the Qiantang River, which originates from the lake.
Pump stations will also be built in Jiande, Tonglu and Fuyang cities to distribute water to 8.06 million people.
