New water source
Hangzhou plans to invest about 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) to build a 111-kilometer-long pipeline to tap Qiandao Lake as its water source.
The project is expected to start this year, but no completion date was set. The city found its tap water tainted four times since March.
Once the pipeline is built, Qiandao Lake, also known as Thousand Island Lake, will replace the Qiantang River as Hangzhou’s main water source, pumping 978 million cubic meters of water into the city.
In March, many residents complained about a strange smell in the tap water, prompting authorities to check the 1,621 factories and other businesses along the Qiantang River. They found 150 were violating waste treatment regulations, shut down 26 factories and detained eight people.
Qiandao Lake is a man-made reservoir west of Hangzhou, with a total surface area of 580 square kilometers. Its water quality is said to be the best in China and the lake is the only unpolluted water resource in the Yangtze River Delta region.
The Department of Water Resources of Zhejiang Province devised a plan in 2004 to channel the lake water to Hangzhou and Jiaxing, but the plan was shelved after a hydropower expert, Qian Zhengying, vetoed it.
