No longer elite

Kaixin Teahouse — once exclusively upscale and pricy — now welcomes ordinary people paying affordable prices. The club reopened to the public on January 27 in Lotus in the Breeze in the Crooked Courtyard, a scenic spot on the West Lake.

It was the first of 30 elite lakeside clubs to reopen to the public after they were closed in a government crackdown on extravagant banquets and official corruption. The city government said no more luxury establishments will be opened in the area. Now the teahouse offers tea and meals at reasonable prices.
