Nobel author visits

NOBEL Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul visited Hangzhou with his wife on August 14 and had a conversation with Mai Jia, chairman of the Zhejiang Writers’ Association, about literature and life.

It is the 81-year-old British author’s first trip to China. The previous week he attended the Shanghai Book Fair. Naipaul received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.

He said he always wanted to visit Hangzhou. “I love what I have seen in this city,” Naipaul said. “I’m thrilled to find so many people like to read my works in a country so far away.”

Naipaul was born in 1932 in Trinidad. He studied at Oxford University in the early 1950s and resided in London after graduation.
