Novelty desserts make a sweet entrance

THERE’S a huge world of sweet treats out there just waiting to be discovered.

Several new desserts can be found across Hangzhou for those willing to try new things.

Some have been created by local chefs, some are fusion and some are imitations of other intriguing concoctions. But if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then, my goodness, let them keep on doing whatever it is they are doing.

Shanghai Daily tucks into four desserts worth trying.

3D printing is a relatively new technology being used to print everything from human organs and houses to medical equipment and food.

Italian ice cream brand Iceason prints Popsicles shaped as Transformers, Steve Jobs, PSY and iPhone 6 with a 3D printer. Prices range from 30 yuan (US$4.7) to 35 yuan.

While the ice cream menu varies, currently the “Steve Jobs” is a plain milky flavor, while Korean singer “PSY” comes in strawberry, and the “iPhone 6” is milk and mango.

Each Popsicle has less than 170 calories, about the same as an apple.

Reyi Fusion Restaurant serves watermelon toast, which is bread that looks like a square watermelon.

The bread is cut in half with a green crust outside and red bread inside. Between the green and red there is a thin layer of whiteness, just like a real watermelon.

First created in Taiwan, Reyi has introduced it in Hangzhou and serves it with lemon-yogurt or vanilla ice cream.

The chef says he uses matcha, or green tea powder, to dye the crust, beetroot to color the inside and powdered edible carbon for the black seeds.

The toast is less milky and not as sweet as ordinary toast.

Another “quirky” Reyi dessert is ice cream hotpot. They use a pot containing ice, dry ice, ice-cream balls and fruits cut into geometrical shapes. Diners use a stick to pluck out the sweet things in the pot.

Ice-cream flavors include basil, beetroot, tofu and Chinese wolfberry. How do they taste? Like iced milky sweet basil, beetroot, tofu and wolfberry.

Dark cloud ice cream is a mixture of cotton candy, ice cream and Pop Rocks and is the signature dessert of South Korean brand Remicone.

Mint-flavor grey cotton candy tops the ice cream, which is sprinkled with Pop Rocks.

A lightning bolt made of white chocolate is in the cotton candy to make it appear like a dark cloud.

Go one and make that dark cloud disappear.

Durian cake has become rather popular at cafes and in restaurants. La Maison de la Creme’s version looks and smells like a durian.

First created by a Malaysian confectioner, Hangzhou chef Ah Da, who used to work at the Hyatt, has made his own version after seeing a picture.

“The most difficult part is to make the thorns,” says the chef, adding he spent three days experimenting to get it just right. “The tip of the thorn should be sharp, and darker than the rest.”

Also, to ensure the durian’s famous odor does not overwhelm the other senses, Ah Da tried a dozen recipes. Eventually he selected mint powder and Chinese lychee wine to make the shell and limit the odor.

The large cake is enough for six people and costs 398 yuan. Order for delivery on its WeChat “misscreammissyou” or go to La Maison de la Creme.
