XIACHENG District of Hangzhou is planning to establish 27 so-called "office building communities" to serve its 170,000 white-collar workers.
Xiacheng is the first place in China to put this concept into practice. The district authorities said an "office building community" consists of companies and employees in the same building or a cluster of buildings. It offers them services and organizes social activities during work hours, acting like a neighborhood committee.
The office building communities eventually will provide more than 100 kinds of services ranging from company registration, motor vehicle registration, and assistance to deal with traffic accidents.
The office building community will also organize social activities such as holding parties and setting up blind dates.
Of the 27 planned office communities, two are now in trial operation. Eleven more will be established by the end of June. All the 27 communities will be set up within three years across the entire Xiacheng District.
