Online hub plea

A political advisor has called on Hangzhou city government to speed up a project creating an online shopping industry hub in the city.

The city is an ideal place for developing the sector as Hangzhou consumers spent on average more than 38,000 yuan (US$6,084) on online shopping last year, said political advisor Xu Genrong.

This figure was released by Alipay, the online payment subsidiary of Alibaba Group.

Hangzhou residents' spending is second only to Taiwan's Chiayi City and the highest among cities on Chinese mainland.

The Hangzhou Online Shopping City project will house around 1,500 e-business service providers.

With a total investment of 350 million yuan, the project is estimated to generate online sales of around 4.5 billion yuan annually and create 20,000 jobs.

Other proposals from political advisors include developing public transport more quickly to ease burdens on the environment.
