Open wide for a bite of food festival
A Hangzhou food festival starts dishing out some good eating today in an area around the Grand Canal, Xu Wenwen reports.
The first Gongshu Food Festival kicks off today with the reopening of Dadou Road in Gongshu District.
With the Grand Canal of China stretching through Gongshu, the district features several historic and cultural relics, such as Xiangji Temple, built in AD 978, and Fuyi Warehouse, built in 1880.
The Hangzhou Municipal Government has sought to promote the Grand Canal during the past nine years. Part of this included renovating ancient buildings along the canal and forging a trade zone in Gongshu to boost the local economy.
Since Dadou Road reopens today, the food trade zone has begun to take shape.
The streets participating in the festival, which continues through October 7, are either next or close to the Grand Canal.
All of the buildings along these streets have been renovated to look like traditional houses with white walls, black roofs and red lanterns.
Here are some highlights of the five food corners.
Dadou Road
The newly revamped street will boast a bunch of high-end local restaurants such as Jiangnan A'er Restaurant and Cui Yue Club Restaurant.
Xiangji Temple is along the road, thus a vegetarian restaurant and a hotel themed around Buddhist culture can be found here.
Well-known establishments such as Green Tea Restaurant, Xiangzhang Yayuna Restaurant and Jiangnanyi Restaurant will open branches here later this year.
Xinyifang Street
This food street is one of the oldest food corners in Hangzhou. Although recently it was outdone by competitors, local government has provided funds for a face-lift to rejuvenate the area.
The street is known for its barbecued skewers and local snacks at sidewalk booths as well as bars. Some outdoor booths are right along the banks of the canal, making for a nice atmosphere.
Shenglihe Street
Since this 500-meter-long street, also called Gushui Street, opened as a food corner in March, it has become very popular.
It features everything from famous donkey meat hotpot and beef offal dishes to spicy Sichuan food and delicate Hangzhou dishes. Diners can also find pizza, other Western food and fresh-ground coffee.
Xiaohezhi and Qiaoxizhi streets
The two streets are uptown and therefore focus on cheap local snacks and dishes to reflect the city's culture. The eateries here are famous for special steamed dishes.
Cost: 30 yuan for one trip
Stops: Wulinmen, Dadou Road, Xiaohezhi Road, Qiaoxizhi Road
To visit Xinyifang Street or Shengli River Road, get off at Dadou Road.
Transportation
As the city is promoting the idea of a low-carbon city, public bicycles and ferries are strongly recommended.
A special ferry route on the Grand Canal will only be available during the festival.
Tips
Keep the ferry ticket. Ticket holders can get a postmark at the service desk of the five food streets.
When five postmarks are collected, the holder will be entered in a lottery draw at the east square of Xinyifang Street. Anyone attending will receive a prize.
