PM2.5 density rises

THE PM2.5 density in Hangzhou was higher this summer than last year as less wind and frequent rains meant pollutants didn’t dissipate as quickly, the city’s environment monitoring center said recently.
Records showed the average PM2.5 index was 48 in July, compared to 31 last year. The index averaged 49 in August, up from 36 last year.
Hong Shengmao, a senior engineer with the Hangzhou Environment Monitoring Center, said a lack of wind and frequent rains meant that air pollutants took longer to disperse.
The center warned heavy smog will likely be more frequent beginning in late October and continuing through the winter. Hong said the prevailing wind in autumn and winter changes direction, bringing more pollution to the city from the north.
