Pagoda crash fine
A West Lake boating company was fined 1.01 million yuan (US$164,900) for damaging one of the three small pagodas that form the famous scene of Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon in West Lake.
One of the boats operated by Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Sightseeing Cruise Company knocked down the top part of the stone pagoda on the night of July 29.
The three pagodas originally date from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and are on the national heritage list. The fallen part of the pagoda was salvaged from the water the next day and the pagoda has been restored.
When candles inside the pagodas are lit, the candle light appears to be a reflection of the moon.
