Painter provides a wider look at the city

A Hangzhou artist has spent five years painting an aerial panoramic picture of Hangzhou which extends 10 by 2.5 meters.

Xiao Yijun, a 60-year-old practitioner of traditional Chinese painting, was resolved to create the large artwork in 2005 when he heard that West Lake was applying for permission to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and he finished the work last year.

The panorama covers most of the urban area of Hangzhou, in which West Lake, Grand Canal and Qiantang River all come into view, while the city's layout such as streets, highways, bridges, houses, pagodas and temples are clearly visible.

"The painting is to keep the current state of Hangzhou on paper, which consists of ancient civilization, natural landscapes and modern architecture," said Xiao.

It took Xiao two years to work out the composition and he didn't start on the painting until he had traveled the length and breadth of the city, and taken nearly 6,000 photos.

Xiao's next plan is to create a painting of Grand Canal, the world's largest canal, which stretches from Beijingto Hangzhou.
