Painting master in solo show suffered for his passion but persevered
DURING the “cultural revolution” (1966-76), artist Zhuge Zhirun was forced to labor for long hours in a brickyard. But he secretly painted and drew pictures at night, not surrendering his passion for his art for one day, even when he was required to labor until midnight or had to hold his brush with a hand marked by bleeding blisters.
At the opening ceremony of his solo exhibition at Zhejiang Art Museum, he said the secret is to believe that “perseverance will lead to final victory.”
The 77-year-old master of traditional Chinese painting, born in Jintan in Jiangsu Province, has shown the truth of his belief with successful exhibits in China and also in Japan, where he has held 18 solo shows, one of the most by a Chinese artist in that country.
In 1985, when he first went to Japan for an exhibition, the Japanese gallery did not have much of an idea about how to price his art and invited Japanese appraisers, who were surprised at his works’ delicacy and bought 15 pieces on the spot.
That gained Zhuge considerable fame, and his 52 pieces were sold out in six days. Nine buyers were lined up to purchase a painting of his called “Meditation,” which featured a myna bird.
Through tomorrow, 130 classical works of Zhuge are exhibiting at Zhejiang Art Museum, with subjects catalogued into birds, landscapes and plants.
Blue, green and red are the three colors he used most in the works — the blues are deep, the greens dignified and serious, and the reds heavy, not bright.
His landscape paintings have been praised as majestic and unconstrained by critics. And his paintings of birds and plants have been called natural and dynamic, demonstrating sophisticated skills and deep thought.
