Patients can't help but like doctor with gift of the gab

A traditional Chinese medicine doctor talks about current affairs and other issues all while giving a massage or acupuncture to his patients, reports Dong Yiying. A well-known herbalist doctor in Hangzhou has developed a strong following among his patients. But his following is not just due to his finely tuned acupuncture and traditional massage skills developed over 30 years. It's because he can sit and chat non-stop with patients while he works at curing them of their ills.

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning at Zhejiang Chinese Medical Hospital, which is on Qingchun Road, Fan Binghua treats patients while giving long, brilliant speeches.

"It is enjoyable to hear the talks given by Doctor Fan," a frequent visitor said. "I always forget I'm in a hospital."

Besides medical problems, Fan talks about a range of issues from national affairs to social news, and occasionally, some original poems.

"It's not a big deal," Fan said modestly when he is praised for his talking skills. "It's just a different combination of words."

But the doctor says he does it not just out of personal interest but because it's an important and necessary part of his treatment.

Absorbed by Fan's interesting stories or opinions, most patients pay little attention to the movement of his hands. Then all of a sudden, after a skillful tweaking, Fan finishes his treatment and the patient's aches are gone.

With more than 30 years of experience, Fan has cured countless patients including many famous athletes.

He attended the National Games as a team doctor of Zhejiang Province on six occasions and became friends with many well-known athletes.

Meng Guanliang, a steady winner in men's canoeing, is one of Fan's patients. He suffered a serious joint strain in 1997, just before the national games. However, Meng won two gold medals at the competition after being treated by Fan.

After Meng was presented his gold medal, the first person he thanked was Fan.

"I was deeply moved by his words," Fan said." They are all like my own kids. "

What is more interesting is that every time Fan attends the National Games, the Zhejiang team wins gold medals in canoeing or rowing.

Luo Xuejuan, winner of the women's 100m breast stroke at the Athens Olympics in 2004, is also a close friend of Fan.

"I still remember the day when she sent me messages and told me she became the first torch bearer of the Beijing Olympic torch rally," Fan said.

Fan is also a professor at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. He gives more than 140 lectures each year.

"I'm doing the work of three or four people," Fan said.

"I always go to bed at 2 or 3 in the morning and get up at 6," he said." In summer, my alarm clock is unnecessary."

The secret of Fan's seemingly limitless amount of energy is the kung fu he has learned for years that can benefit internal organs. This famous Chinese kung fu is called Yi Jin Jing, which is usually regarded as a fictitious martial art existing only in kung fu stories.

However, according to Fan, Shaolin kung fu including Yi Jin Jing is, in fact, a required course in Chinese medicine and it does help strengthen people's physical health.

Fan always reminds his patients that they should be the master of their own bodies. To this end, they should explain their symptoms clearly, go to the right hospital and find the right doctor.
