Photo festival captures city’s best images

HANGZHOU’S beautiful scenery and leisurely pace of life has generated a passion for photography among many city residents. The past six Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festivals have shown that some amateur photographers are very skilled and have a keen eye for detail.

The 7th Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival kicks off today and continues until June 30. With a theme of “My City and Me,” the local government is turning the spotlight on the environment.

Photographs illustrating the Hangzhou government’s endeavors to harness the natural environment and the city’s urban transportation network will be the focus of the festival. Both amateur and professional photographers had been encouraged to submit pictures.

The festival was initially held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of China’s opening and reform policy, and to show how Hangzhou had changed during the past three decades. It was also about inclusiveness since all residents were eligible to enter their photographs.

Organizers notified residents about this year’s festival from March 3 to April 15, inviting those interested to submit photos related to the theme.

A group of professional photographers have since evaluated all the photographs submitted. Until the end of next month, the selected photos will be on display at various locations around the city.

DIY postcards

This year’s festival includes a chance to make do-it-yourself postcards under the event name “Discover the charm of Hangzhou.”

Anyone can participate. All you have to do is take a photo, then log in at www.diy616.com, or scan a QR code to upload it. If you are at the exhibition, a postcard of the photo can be printed right away and you can then send it anywhere in the world. Those not at the exhibition need not worry. Just upload the photo you want on the postcard and provide the receiver’s address so government staff can post it on your behalf.

The event starts today at 3pm and all postcards for the day are free. For the rest of the festival, people can send one free postcard.

Participants can get printouts of their DIY postcard at seven locations: Leifeng Pogoda, Marco Polo Square (at the Sixth Park where there is a statue of Marco Polo), Orioles Singing in the Willows (Nanshan Road and Hefang Street intersection), the south end of Su Causeway, Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake (1 Gushan Houshan Rd), First Park, and Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard (89 Beishan Rd).
