Photos absorb visual feast in scenic Chun鈥檃n

BICYCLES and cyclists, check. Rape flowers and peach trees, check. Huge fish leaping from the water, check. Snap, snap and snap. More than 150 photojournalists recently took a tour around picturesque Qiandao Lake in Hangzhou’s Chun’an County.

The 982-square-kilometer scenic area, which is also known as Thousand Island Lake, was formed after the completion of a local hydroelectric station in 1959 and boasts thousands of islands of various sizes.

The photographers focused their lens on the area’s 500-square-kilometers lake. They also showed keen interest in the human drama taking place around the body of water. Sporting events, performances and local delicacies all grabbed attention.

“The Sprite of Water,” a local stage show combing dancing, martial arts and acrobatics, offered a feast for the eyes. Meanwhile, a picture-worthy cycling event took place on a 140-kilometer path winding between peach woods and yellow rape flowers. Some shutterbugs even took a helicopter ride to photograph a wedding from the air.

Netting fish, of course is a fisherman’s daily occupation. This task drew photographers due to the vivid movements when the fish bounced out of the water.

The group also went to Zhujia Village in Chun’an for the local Pig Head Contest, an event with over 800 years of history.

Pig heads were traditionally used as sacrificial offerings and the contest awards the largest and best decorated heads.

Shanghai Daily photographer Zhang Suoqing took a close look at scenic Chun’an.
