Winning photos in the Ninth China International Press Photography Contest are on display at the foot of Solitude Hill and along Bai Causeway, after an awards ceremony in the city early this year.

Seventy-five pieces or groups of Gold Award photos from the international contest — led by the Grand Prize, “Goodbye in Gaza” by Bernat Armangue from the Associated Press, welcome visitors at the picturesque West Lake.

Armangue, from Spain, received a prize of 100,000 yuan at the awards ceremony.

The photojournalist was covering news in Palestine last year, and while working, he witnessed several armed conflicts.

“Though conflicts are too fast to have people think, photos allow them to think about things like life, loyalty and friendship,” the winner told Shanghai Daily.

More than 30,000 photos by some 3,000 journalists and photographers from around 70 countries and regions were submitted; more than 70 percent of entries were from foreign countries and regions.

All photos are in eight categories that included daily life, war and disaster, the economy and technology, as well as art, culture and entertainment.

Coupled with those photos, 120 pieces or groups of winning photos from the 3rd Zhejiang College Student Photography Exhibition are showcased there as well. The outdoor exhibition, which runs to Sunday, is free to the public.
