Plenty to see and air to breathe on a trip to the lake of a thousand islands

THE Qiaodao Lake or Thousand Islands Lake in Hangzhou is so named for the 1,078 islands scattered around its waters. Water is the largest resource and attraction of the area and all the islands are covered with trees. Visitors can take a ship to Anhui Province and browse most of the thousand islands on the lake.

The lake is clean and as clear as a mirror and shines gorgeously under sunshine.

The islands, each with distinctive shapes and landscapes, are like one thousand diamonds on the surface. It is not only cheering to explore the landscape and features of those islands, but also fun to see the shadows of different islands on the lake.

In recent years, the local government and developers have explored and built dozens of such islands into tourist attractions.

For example, the Lock Island is a theme park featuring keys. It is divided into three sections including a museum of Chinese locks.

Many tourists also leave their wish locks on the island hoping their dreams could come true.

Another popular kind is called tong xin suo, or the lock of the same heart. In ancient China, it is used to symbolize locking of the hearts of a couple, which means they will love each other and stay together forever.

The Chun'an County, where the Qiandao Lake is located, holds a water show every two years to promote such beautiful scenes and the fifth one will be in September.

The water show includes 19 events including sports, cultural exhibitions, selected from hundreds of candidates.

The opening show, set outdoors alongside the beautiful lake and the grand mountains, will star many top Chinese singers.

Water wedding

It has been a trend to shoot wedding pictures or even hold the wedding ceremony in natural scenery in recent years.

Many young couples travel hundreds of kilometers to the mountains and waters to add more romance to their big day.

For many, the natural mountains and waters are a better venue for their declaration of love than fancy hotel rooms. The Qiandao Lake is on top of many couples' favorites lists.

Next month, 56 couples from 56 different Chinese ethnic groups will hold a group wedding at the Qiandao Lake during the 2009 water show.

The grand water wedding will be held on a luxurious cruise on the lake with events following on Moonlight Island.

The couples will wear their minority group's traditional costumes and the group wedding will feature all kinds of traditional customs from the different groups.

Sports

The International Road Cycling Invitation Competition and the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup will also be held during the 2009 water show.

The FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup will start its Qiandao Lake section match on September 20 with nearly 100 professional swimmers and coaches from more than 20 countries.

And the gorgeous scenery of the area will also attract hundreds of spectators to the cycling event.

Visitors will not only see a thrilling competition, but also enjoy the natural scenery along the race track.
