Poet and mayor who made city more beautiful Luo Hanlin
Hangzhou once had a mayor who also happens to be one of the most famous figures in Chinese literature. Poet and politician Su Shi (1037–1101) did much to establish Hangzhou as a scenic city - a reputation that endures to this day. Locals commemorate the city visionary at the Su Dongpo Memorial, which gets its name from a pseudonym he was known by.
The memorial was completed in 1989, but closed for renovations this April. It recently reopened to the public.
Located on the south side of Su Causeway, built by Su himself, the memorial is close to the Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor and Thunder Peak Evening Glow, two scenic sites in the city, hidden among greenery and flowers.
Su was a major poet of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). His pseudonym was Dongpo Jushi, and he is often referred to as Su Dongpo.
Su was exiled to Hangzhou as mayor between 1069 and 1089. On his watch, Su was best remembered for dredging West Lake. He also laid out the basic layout of the current West Lake. Su asked people to pile up vegetation in the middle of West Lake, creating a causeway. To commemorate him, Hangzhou residents named it Su Causeway.
Su's memorial consists of a courtyard, a two-story pavilion and grounds at the rear. In the courtyard stands a full-length granite depiction of Su.
The two-floor exhibition building is a tower in the Song Dynasty style. The first floor focuses on the relationship between Su and Hangzhou. It includes: Su's introduction; his achievements in his post; the dredging of West Lake; his anecdotes about Hangzhou; and some of his literary work.
The exhibition also puts high-tech techniques to use, such as ink painting animation, touch screen and rotatable images. Among the most interesting is the 3D panorama model of West Lake.
Through the multimedia presentation, visitors can clearly see Su's contribution to the landscape.
The second floor displays Su's poems, written out by modern-era calligraphy masters, such as Sha Menghai. Also on display are ink paintings on the topic of Su by masters such as Zhang Daqian and Lu Yanshao.
In a connecting corridor are stone rubbing inscriptions. They are Su's handwriting and paintings, containing "The Red Cliffs" and "Remembering Su Che on the Mid-Autumn Festival."
The Su Dongpo Memorial has a guide service in Chinese, English and Japanese, so there's no excuse for foreign visitors not to learn all about Su, artistic giant and Hangzhou's beloved old mayor.
