Poignant Gaza photograph takes top press award
BERNAT Armangue from Associated Press has won the grand prize in the China International Press Photography Contest with his photograph "Goodbye in Gaza."
Awards in the ninth annual competition were announced on Monday in Hangzhou. More than 70 other entries received gold, silver and bronze awards, plus awards of excellence in eight categories, including daily life, war and disaster, the economy and technology as well as art, culture and entertainment.
The Barcelona-born photographer's winning picture shows a Palestinian man kisses the hand of a dead relative in the morgue of Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
More than 30,000 photos by some 3,000 journalists and photographers from around 70 countries and regions were submitted; more than 70 percent of entries were from foreign countries and regions.
Armangue will receive a prize of 100,000 yuan (US$15,864) at an awards ceremony this October in Hangzhou.
The event will also feature activities such as a photography forum, an exhibition of award-winning photographs and a photograph-taking tour.
Armangue also scooped the gold award in the war and disaster category with his "The Gaza Conflict" set, of which the "Goodbye in Gaza" image was part.
"We were looking for a photograph of universal appeal that people of different cultures can all understand. The photograph should be timeless, so that people always feel emotion when they view the photograph, regardless of the era," said Bharat Choudhary, a judge on the jury.
"Winning photographs were chosen according to a number of criteria, such as whether they reflect their time; show humanity; and have visual impact," said Yu Ning, the chairman of the contest committee.
The 13-person jury included five members from China, plus others from India, Germany, the USA, Britain, Thailand, Argentina and South Africa.
The contest also sought to focus on peace and development, works which reflect achievements, changes and progress, and capture life conditions, emotions, willpower and the strength the subjects, said judges.
The contest was sponsored by the Photojournalist Society of China, and undertaken by Zhejiang Daily Newspaper Group, the Organizing Committee of the Hangzhou International West Lake Expo and Hangzhou Information Office.
