Poultry restrictions
Hangzhou local authorities announced a ban on live poultry trading in Xiaoshan, and the closure of Xinnongdu Grocery Market in the district this week. It is part of the effort to stem the spread of the H7N9 bird flu virus. This year, five cases were reported in Xiaoshan, making it the place with the most cases in Zhejiang Province.
The live poultry market linked to the cases tested positive for the virus, while all the poultry markets in five districts of urban Hangzhou have tested negative.
Local authorities are going to investigate all the other 89 markets in Hangzhou to see if they meet the criteria for live poultry trading.
The criteria released last August by the municipal government requires poultry markets disinfect cages and knives daily, treat feces and dirt in a hazard-free way, and close not fewer than three days per month for thorough cleaning and disinfection.
The ban on poultry trading will remain until government risk assessments indicate safe results.
