Promoting tourism

HANGZHOU Vice Mayor Zhang Jianting and Ken Livingstone, former vice mayor of the City of London, spoke at a meeting featuring history, tourism, calligraphy, tea and Chinese folk music in London this week.

Tourism representatives from both cities also signed a cooperation memorandum during the meeting. As part of the promotion of Hangzhou in Europe, the city will also introduce its history and tourism attractions in other European cities.

Metro Line 1

Construction on the extension of Metro Line 1 will start at the end of March as bidding for the project was delayed until March 17.

The delay is due to the government of Hangzhou setting a bidding price ceiling in January on government-invested construction.

The extended section is in Xiasha development zone. It will stretch 5.45 kilometers and include three stations. A total of 261 trees were transplanted in January to make way for construction.

Helping hands

TWELVE calligraphers and painters created more than 50 works and donated them this week to an auction in order to raise money for a high school student with a life threatening disease from a poor mountainous village in Fuyang in suburban Hangzhou.

The student, Xu Gao, received 113,685 yuan (US$18,014) from the auction to cover medical treatment. At the same time, people donated blood at a blood donation bus parked outside the auction building.

Xu was diagnosed with aplastic anemia 10 years ago and has relied on herbal medicines dug by his parents to remain healthy and continue his studies.

Xu's fellow students and teachers donated 138,000 yuan.

However, Xu needs at least 800,000 yuan to pay for a bone marrow transplant.

Production stops

Hangzhou Glass Group Co Ltd halted production at one of its plants on Friday afternoon, part of Hangzhou's efforts to cut PM2.5 particles in the air.

The company began to close its four production lines on December 18. The plant's closure will cut processed gas emissions by 1 billion cubic meters annually, including more than 950 tons of sulfur dioxide.

The plant is in Gongshu District.

The city has closed down 417 industrial enterprises producing combustible exhausts in the Banshan and Beidaqiao areas in the past five years.

Jewelry exhibit

THE 7th Hangzhou International Jewelry Fair will be held at the Hangzhou Peace International Exhibition Center beginning today.

The exhibition area will expand 30 percent to 13,000 square meters with 500 booths. Last year 60 brands were exhibited in 400 booths, covering a floor space of 10,000 square meters. The exhibition will end on March 12.

Zong tops rich list

THE 67-year-old founder of a soft drink company based in Hangzhou was named as the richest person on the Chinese mainland.

According to the Hurun Global Rich List 2012, Zong Qinghou, CEO of Wahaha, is worth US$10.5 billion.

Zong replaces heavy machinery mogul Liang Wengen, 55, founder of Sany Group, as the mainland's wealthiest person.

The beverage tycoon ranks 78th on a list topped by Carlos Slim, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and is the only mainlander to have amassed a fortune of more than US$10 billion.

The Hurun Research Institute's list of those worth more than US$10 billion comprises 83 individuals with an average age of 66 and an average wealth of US$18 billion.

Pavilion opens

Wangxian Pavilion at the relics site of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) opened recently.

The 45-meter-tall building features a basement with a plexiglas floor that showcases the relic site discovered in the summer of 2010.

The site contains many water vats and experts think it was a dye house or restaurant.

The pavilion also includes paintings and books of old Hangzhou. The top floor gives people a great view of nearby scenery, including Chenghuang Pavilion.

It is open for free from 10am to 5pm Wednesday through Sunday.
