Protecting the canal

HANGZHOU’S legislature has passed a new regulation to protect the heritage of the Grand Canal, making it illegal to damage structures or dump garbage in the surrounding waters.

The law passed by the Hangzhou People’s Congress applies to facilities such as the Gongchen Bridge, Guangji Bridge, Fengshan Water Gate and the Xixingguotangxing Dock, as well as other heritage sites, including the Fuyicang Warehouse and the Qiaoxi Historic Culture Block.

It outlaws carving, painting, damaging, repairing or demolishing structures without permission and also applies to water gates, the embankments and boundary markers.

Garbage dumping, waste water emissions, swimming and fishing are also banned.

The maximum fine has been set at 100,000 yuan.
