Public toilets improved
THERATIO of public toilets for men and women on Hangzhou’s streets is now 2:3, and in scenic areas the ratio is 1:2, making Hangzhou a pioneering city to meet national gender ratio standards for public toilets.
According to a standard on public toilets in urban areas published by the Ministry of Housing and urban-Rural Development recently, the toilet ratio in public washrooms in all cities in China should meet the same ratio requirements (2:3) after December 1.
Hangzhou started a three-year program to improve its public toilets in 2007. In 2014, the program in Zhejiang Province, including Hangzhou, won a national award from the ministry.
So far there are 1,982 public washrooms open for residents and tourists citywide with 21,950 toilets.
Recently 32 public washrooms in Hangzhou were listed among the “Most Beautiful Public Toilets in China” by the Chinese association of Urban Environment and Sanitation.
The public washroom on Xiaoyue Lane, near the crossing of Wansongling and zhonghe roads, is even equipped with sensors and a “backstage management” system. Workers can monitor the operation of the toilet at a distance and sensors can also send alarms on breakdowns or malfunctions.
