Quake kids help each other

A Hangzhou volunteer organization, Enjoy Life, made International Children's Day heartwarming for students in Sichuan and Qinghai provinces that both suffered earthquakes.

Around 300 students in Qingchuan, Sichuan, sent hand-painted T-shirts to children in Yushu County, Qinghai, where a quake struck in April. An earthquake struck Sichuan in May 2008, so the students empathize with each other.

On Tuesday, Children's Day, the Sichuan students in Qingxi Primary School decorated 300 T-shirts with hearts and symbols of hope as well as the words "Braveness, Hope and Sunshine" in both Mandarin and Tibetan. They created their work in a new school house completed in January to replace the school that collapsed in the quake.

The shirts will be sent to Yushu this month.

Kids typically drew hearts, rainbows, houses and wrote "Come on," "Tomorrow will be better" and "We are together."

The sharing project was organized by Hangzhou residents Lin Junjun and Ying Kai from Enjoy Life, which has helped Sichuan earthquake survivors.

A 10-year-old girl Jia Hui drew a wall and a rainbow and said: "I hope Yushu's children can break through walls of difficulties to find the hope and sunshine. I hope they soon have a beautiful school house as we do.

"Most of them drew hearts to show love because those who experienced the same thing clearly know that Yushu kids need love most," said Yang Jun, headmaster of Qingxi School.

Students began sketching two weeks ago when they learned they would paint T-shirts as gifts for students in Yushu. Some children spontaneously donated money to help Yushu kids after they heard about the Qinghai quake.

"These kids who have accepted love from others have a better understanding of how to pass love on," said Lin from the organizer.

"We help them pass along courage to people in Yushu in an artistic way," said Lin. "Doing good doesn't have to mean donating money - even small actions like drawing pictures can help those who give and those who receive."
