Radiant rabbits light up the city

WITH the Year of the Rabbit already in swing, Hangzhou has been overtaken by resplendent rabbits to mark tomorrow's Lantern Festival.

Traditionally, the Lunar Chinese New Year celebration won't end until Lantern Festival, a day to eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball), solve riddles on lanterns and enjoy family reunion.

Across Hangzhou, urban districts have been preparing to astound residents and visitors alike with striking illuminations featuring the auspicious animal, and below are some of the areas worth visiting to join the Lantern Festival celebrations and view the brightest bunnies.

Xihu District

The highlight of the Lantern Festival in Xihu District takes place at the picturesque Xixi National Wetland Park, and will include a lantern fair, garden party and a bazaar in Jiang Village.

From 5pm to 8pm through Friday, Chinese traditional lanterns, mostly in the shape of rabbits and flowers, will decorate the wetland park at the South Gate, North Gate, Hezhu Street and Fu Causeway.

The garden party which also takes place from today to Friday will present folk performances by Jiang Village Folk Troupe, and folk artists will make artifacts such as floatable lotus lanterns and brilliantly decorated baskets.

The Jiang Village Bazaar will be open during the Lantern Festival, and with dozens of elegant bars this is the destination for party animals.

This evening from 7:18pm to 7:38pm, a firework display will dazzle crowds at the crossing of Huajiang Road and the North Gate of Xixi National Wetland Park.

Xicheng Square, Wenxin Night Market and Sandun Night Market will also be taking part in the lantern fair.

Gongshu District

At 6:30pm from today to Friday, thousands of red lanterns extending 7 kilometers from Jiangzhang Bridge to Gongchen Bridge will illuminate the historic Grand Canal.

Visitors can also take the ferry along the canal to the more than 1,000-year-old Xiangji Temple to make a New Year wish.

Various entertainment will take place at the West Square of Xinyifang and Jiacheng Yeyue Park, including paper cutting, mini-kite making and a garden party.

At the West Square of Xinyifang, 26 large-scale lamps standing more than 3 meters tall will be on display, while at the nearby Shenglihe Food Street a traditional opera performance will be staged.

During the Lantern Festival, hundreds of trees along Hushu Road S. will be decorated with flashing lights to mark the opening ceremony of the newly designed business street.

Until Sunday, the China Knife, Scissors and Sword Museum and China Fan Museum offer riddle-guessing games.

In addition, Qiaoxi Block, Xiaohe Block, Dadou Road Block and Xinyifang Street will also be adorned with beautiful lamps.

Shangcheng District

The main venue for the lantern fair in Shangcheng District is Wushan Square, across which all kinds of lamps and lanterns will be displayed.

The square's front entrance will feature a grand, 50-meter-long, 12-meter-tall and 5-meter-wide glittering arch, decorated with rabbit-shaped lanterns.

And the three ancient-style streets in the area - Royal Street of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Hefang Street and Gaoyin Street - will be adorned with traditional lanterns.

Xiacheng District

West Lake Culture Square is the main venue in Xiacheng, and its central axis (from Jingguan Bridge to the X-building in the north) will become the "Lamp Avenue," along which a wall will be adorned with the Chinese characters fu (fortune) and shou (longevity).

Clusters of red lanterns will be hung high along Fengqi and Tiyuchang roads, while lantern fairs will be held in Wulin Street, Chinese Silk Street and Zhongbei Creative Block.

Jianggan District

The lantern fair in Jianggan District has a theme of "living a low-carbon life." Among the visual displays, visitors will be able to see a 20-meter-long lantern arch and a "high-speed train" lamp at Qingchun Square. This evening, for those who want to understand more about Chinese traditional culture, riddle-guessing games will be held at Qingchun Square.

Binjiang District

Binjiang District will provide citizens with a great banquet of illuminations, lasting until Friday.

Starting with an "appetizer" of 300 lotus lanterns at the man-made lake in Binjiang Park, the "banquet" will also feature outdoor film screenings in the park, riddle-guessing games and more than a dozen of snack booths.

In addition, a talent show given by local troupes including Hangzhou Acrobatics Troupe and Hangzhou New Youth Song and Dance Ensemble, will be staged at Shechao Square tomorrow.
