Raffarin book builds bridge between France and China
JEAN-PIERRE Raffarin, former prime minister of France and senator for Vienne, came to Hangzhou last Saturday to promote the book "What China Taught Us" ("Ce Que La Chine Nous A Appris"), which he wrote with his wife Anne-Marie Perrier.
"It's not a political book, neither a history or science book, but a letter of friendship to China," said Raffarin.
The book involves eight chapters narrating the couple's understanding of China, such as the friendship between China and France, modern development of China, Chinese calligraphy, festivals and medicines.
Raffarin has been "an old friend" to China. When Beijing faced the SARS outbreak in 2003, he was the first Western leader to visit China. After his resignation, Raffarin continued to visit China frequently.
Raffarin and his wife have been interested in Chinese culture for a long time. While Raffarin has a Chinese-French bilingual blog at www.ifeng.com, his wife studied Chinese in Paris for four years.
It's not the first book Raffarin has written about China. In 1977, he wrote "Life in Yellow," in which he depicted China after the "cultural Revolution" (1966-1976).
