Relaxing spots to suit all tastes

HANGZHOU has plenty options for a cup of tea, a beer and other drinks, often with beautiful scenery thrown in. Wu Huixin and Xu Wenwen report.

La Luna

Next to a busy, touristy spot on West Lake, La Luna has a European country facade, with white walls and blue window frames.

Interior decoration is European and there are posters of European sites on the walls.

The name in Chinese is Lanyue (literally meaning "Reach for the Moon").

The second floor offers a panoramic view of West Lake. Due to its ideal location, the consumption is high, at least 2,000 yuan per booth.

During the day, La Luna offers classic Hangzhou dishes, such as West Lake vinegar fish, Longjing tea shrimp and Cantonese and Sichuan dishes.

In the afternoon black tea, scented tea and milk tea are served, 48 to 60 yuan per person.

Drinking tea in the shade of the back garden, visitors can enjoy the landscape of mountains and lake and watch the tourists go by.

At night, La Luna becomes a bar, serving beer and cocktails.

Park 1999

This two-story multi-venue bar is shaded by phoenix trees on Nanshan Road. It contains five zones: Fireside, Red Wine, Shanzhai, Tangkou and Dock.

Fireside has a minority nationality flavor of southwestern China. Four Tibetan prayer wells are positioned at the doorway.

A stairwell is carved with characters of the Naxi language in the southwest.

A 100-year-old wooden boat is a dramatic part of the decor.

In this area, every booth is named after a famous mountain, lake or other part of the scenic topography. Dim sum, corn and other snacks are prepared on the copper stoves which you can only see in Lijiang area.

Red Wine zone offers 100 kinds of quality foreign and domestic red wine. Comfortable sofas and jazz make it relaxing, a good place to chat for business or with friends.

Shanzhai is an Internet slang for cheap copy. But this is the real thing. A romantic bar. It seats as many as 50 people and is suitable for small parties. Photography equipment is available. Advance booking is required for parties.

Tangkou is a pub-club with enthusiastic floor shows and disco dancing. From 9pm-12am, four or five singers perform.

Dock is decorated in an outdoor park style, with real trees. Guests feel as though they are sitting outdoors.

Fruit juice is 40 yuan, snacks 35 yuan, and a tray of fruit is 160 yuan.

Shamrock

Shamrock is the only Irish bar in Hangzhou. It's owned by Danish Taiwanese Chuin-Hsiung Chan who first planned to open his Irish pub in Denmark but then decided on Hangzhou in 2004.

It features Irish stout, a dark beer brewed from rye from Dublin, as well as Kilkenny, a kind of red beer that originated in Kilkenny, Ireland. It's craft-brewed with malted barley in the oldest brewery in Ireland, dating back to the 14th century.

Both Irish stout and Kilkenny are 60 yuan (US$9.42) per pint.

Its bar menu includes fish and chips, Irish stew and hamburgers.

Every weekend, live bands perform, notably Irish folk music.
