Rescuer remembered

LIU Weifeng, a ship captain who died of exhaustion after jumping into the water to rescue a drowning woman and her 3-year-old daughter, was honored last week and his family received a 300,000 yuan (US$43,699) reward.

A representative from the Hangzhou Foundation for Justice and Courage presented the money and a certificate to Liu’s father.

On the night of October 31, Liu heard someone falling into the Qiantang River and jumped into water. He swam towards two people drifting in the river. Another crewman came to their rescue as well. Together they struggled to push the woman and her daughter onto an arriving raft. Both men in the water were exhausted and Liu disappeared under the water. His body was found four days later.
