Ride of a lifetime

A 35-year-old American rode a trike from Ningbo to Hangzhou on August 18. Matthew Galat said he plans to travel around more than 100 countries on a three-wheel cycle within five years.

Galat, who owns a trading company in Ningbo, said his next stop is Yellow Mountain in Anhui and then he will head south to Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

“I want to enjoy life and I want to inspire people to realize their dreams,” Galat said. “My friends told me their unusual experiences before and I was only a listener then. I hope I can share my adventures with them one day.”

After leaving China, he plans to pass through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, India and Pakistan before hitting the Middle East. After that his plan calls for crossing the Red Sea to Africa, then to Europe and back to Africa, down to Zambia. He even plans to take his trike to Antarctica before going to South America and ending his journey in North America.

He has a thirst for adventure. Galat said he has swum across the Yellow River in northwest Qinghai Province, ran the Great Wall Marathon in Beijing and scaled two mountains each with an altitude of over 6,000 meters.
