Rise in animal bites
MORE than 10,000 people have been bitten by pets and wild animals in Hangzhou since May.
Summer is the peak season for dog bites, with 3,900 people receiving rabies shots in July alone, according to Dr Wei Fang from the Hangzhou Disease Control and Prevention Center.
About four of every five victims are bitten by dogs, with the rest injured by cats, bats and mice, Wei said.
Pet expert Yang Chaoliang said people may make the mistake of shaving their dogs in summer to keep them cool. But a shaven dog is more likely to contract skin infections that will make the canine cranky and more aggressive.
Dogs rely on breathing to cool down, so shaving them doesn't have the same effect as it would for humans.
