Rise in average salary

THE average salary of Hangzhou white-collar workers rose to 7,933 yuan in the second quarter of the year, according to a report published on Zhaopin.com.

Hangzhou moved up from the 8th place in the first quarter to fourth in the nation for average salary after Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, the report said.

However, many major cities reported a drop in average salary for the first time since 2016 as the war for talent among small businesses lost steam, according to the report.

The average salary in China’s top 37 cities was 7,376 yuan in the second quarter, down 3.8 percent from the first quarter. Micro and small businesses led the decline with a drop of 31 percent.

The report attributed the decline to weaker competition among startups as investment dropped to rational levels, falling employment in first-tier cities due to high living costs, and the move of labor-intensive enterprises to smaller cities.

Beijing boasts the highest average salary in China with 9,791 yuan, followed by Shanghai with 9,337 yuan and Shenzhen with 8,866 yuan.

Sales, business administration, software and IT jobs were in big demand in the second quarter, the report added.
