River clean-up in sight

PROVINCIAL authorities plan to clean up all severely polluted rivers in Zhejiang Province before the end of the year, according to a recent government meeting on river pollution.

The objective is three years before a deadline set in an original plan adopted last April.

Zhejiang has about 130,000 kilometers of rivers and many of them are heavily polluted.

“We want to reduce industrial pollution through the clean-up drive and accelerate industrial transformation,” said Xia Baolong, the Party secretary of Zhejiang Province.

Hangzhou has appointed public servants as “river chiefs” who are held responsible for water pollution and treatment of their rivers. Meanwhile, more than 16,000 residents are acting as monitors.
