Rivers cleaned up

LAST year 47 rivers were dredged and beautified to create a better environment for nearby residents, the Hangzhou Urban Management Commission said in a report last week.

Twenty-one of the rivers are in Gongshu District and 13 are in Jianggan District. After dredging and flushing, the murky and stinky rivers were significantly cleaner with water clarity reaching more than 50 centimeters. Fish and underwater weeds can now be seen clearly.

The city government plans to dredge 30 more rivers this year to make them clean and resistant to flooding. It also plans to improve biodiversity in five rivers. Hangzhou has cleaned up 102 of its 113 urban rivers.
