Safari Park protection deal
Hangzhou Safari Park signed an agreement with China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda to set up a base in Hangzhou.
It will be the first national research and conservation center for giant pandas in Zhejiang Province. The construction of the center, inside the Hangzhou Safari Park, is expected to kick off this year and be completed by 2022.
The first phase of the project will be constructed around a hill with rich vegetation. The center will have habitation and exhibition areas, breeding areas, a research center and science popularization education center.
There are two giant pandas in Hangzhou Safari Park, Lili and Shanhu, on loan from Chengdu Giant Panda Research Center in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
In Hangzhou Zoo, there also are two giant pandas, Chengjiu and Shuanghao, on loan from Chengdu Giant Panda Research Center.
With a base in the city, the giant pandas do not have to return to Chengdu for reproduction. Experts will be invited from Chengdu to guide the reproduction work. Hangzhou was chosen as the base thanks to its excellent natural environment. In addition, Hangzhou residents have high awareness of protecting nature and wild animals. So far there are two national natural reserves, 29 provincial natural reserves, one national wetland park and three provincial wetland parks in Hangzhou.
