Services for seniors
Zhejiang provincial regulations on elderly care services came into effect on March 1. Last year there were more than 9.45 million people aged 60 or above in the province, including 1.47 million who are at least 80 years old. They make up 19.4 percent of Zhejiang’s population.
The new regulations define the responsibility of the government, social organizations and enterprises for providing elderly care. Government-funded nursing homes should give priority to needy families that have senior members who have a disability or dementia. State-run nursing homes should inform the public of the availability of beds.
According to provincial officials, home care services will cover 96 percent of the aged population. City, county and district governments must draw up comprehensive plans to develop home care services.
The regulations also encourage adding elevators in old apartment buildings for the convenience of seniors. College graduates employed by a non-profit nursing home or day-care center will receive one-off cash rewards based on performance.
