Sewage network

A MORE efficient sewage pipe network will be built to cover most of the city’s major districts in five years, the city authority said last week.

Officials said that 79 of the planned 248 sewage improvement projects have been completed since July 2013, when a citywide campaign began to upgrade Hangzhou’s urban water environment.

By the end of this year, officials have targeted the cleanup of 264 polluted rivers. Officials said compared with early last year, the quality of local waterways has improved.

But more efforts are needed to protect the city’s waterways and revamping the city’s sewage system is an important part of the plan as it would prevent polluted water from entering the city’s ground water.

It’s estimated that waste water from nearly 40,000 washing machines is being poured directly into local waterways every day.
